Decay Guide
everyday dental health

How teeth actually fail, and what routine care really prevents.

Most dental trouble is a progression, not an event. These guides map how each one moves: what is happening, what you would notice, and what to do at each stage.

How a cavity forms, stage by stage

5 stages · earliest first
  1. 01

    Demineralisation

    Enamel only
    What’s happening
Acid from plaque bacteria draws minerals out of the enamel surface.
    What you’ll notice
A chalky white spot. Usually no pain at all.
    What to do
The one stage that can still turn around. Disrupt plaque every day and ask a dentist about fluoride.
    Often reversible
  2. 02

    Enamel decay

    Enamel breached
    What’s happening
Mineral loss goes far enough that the enamel surface collapses and a hole opens.
    What you’ll notice
A small pit, or a brown or darkened patch. Often still painless.
    What to do
Needs a filling. Enamel does not grow back, so the aim now is to stop the cavity spreading.
    No longer reversible
  3. 03

    Dentin decay

    Into the dentin
    What’s happening
Decay passes the enamel into the softer dentin beneath, which connects to the nerve.
    What you’ll notice
Sensitivity to cold, sweet things or pressure; the spot usually darkens.
    What to do
Book promptly. Dentin is softer than enamel, so decay moves faster from here.
    No longer reversible
  4. 04

    Pulp involvement

    Into the nerve
    What’s happening
Bacteria reach the pulp — the tissue carrying the tooth's nerve and blood supply — and it becomes inflamed.
    What you’ll notice
Toothache, pain that lingers after hot or cold, tenderness when biting.
    What to do
Urgent appointment. Treatment is usually root canal therapy rather than a simple filling.
    Act now
  5. 05

    Abscess

    Beyond the tooth
    What’s happening
Infection spreads out of the tooth into the surrounding tissue and a pocket of pus forms.
    What you’ll notice
Severe pain, swelling of the gum or face, a bad taste, sometimes fever.
    What to do
Same-day dental or medical care. Swelling that reaches the eye or under the tongue is an emergency.
    Emergency

Adapted from public patient-education descriptions of tooth decay. Stage names vary between sources, and decay can sit between stages for years — only an examination and X-rays can say where a particular tooth is.

Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel

Do Teeth Have Nerves? Yes—Inside the Tooth Pulp

Nerve fibers sit in soft pulp beneath enamel and dentin. Cold, sweets, pressure, decay or a crack may cause pain without exposing a nerve.

Gum Recession And Periodontal Care

How Long Can Teeth Last With Periodontal Disease?

No fixed timeline applies: retention depends on bone support, tooth stability, infection control, treatment response, tobacco exposure and continuing care.

Fillings Crowns And Restorations

Crown Fell Out but Doesn't Hurt? What to Do Now

Save the crown, keep the tooth clean and avoid chewing on it while arranging dental care. Breathing or swallowing difficulty requires emergency help.

Routine vs. Deep Cleaning It removes plaque and hardened tartar above or below the gumline; deep cleaning adds root planing, with different steps, timing and recovery. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Why Do My Teeth Feel Loose? Causes and Next Steps Possible causes include gum disease, injury, grinding or clenching, and pregnancy-related changes; a knocked-out permanent tooth needs emergency care. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Cracked Tooth Symptoms and Pain Patterns Pain may occur while biting or on release, come and go, or be absent. Hot, cold, and sweet foods may also trigger sensitivity. Tooth Decay And Cavities Home Remedies for Tooth Infection: Relief, Not a Cure For covered adult conditions, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may ease pain temporarily; dental care treats the source, and fever or malaise may warrant antibiotics. Cavity Signs And Appearance Small Hole in Tooth, No Pain: Causes and What to Do Possible causes include decay, erosion, wear, a fracture or damaged dental work; a dental exam is needed to identify the defect. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Bruised Tooth vs Dead Tooth: Pulp Vitality A bruised tooth may retain living pulp and recover; a dead tooth cannot regain vitality. Pain and color alone cannot confirm either. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Why Gums Bleed When Brushing: Causes Plaque-related inflammation is most likely; forceful cleaning, health factors and medicines can contribute, while persistent or heavy bleeding needs assessment. Dental Treatment Recovery Blood Clot After Tooth Extraction: What’s Normal? Sort improving healing from warning signs, with steps for renewed bleeding and clear triggers for severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding or possible infection. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Can Enamel Be Replaced? No—What’s Still Possible The deciding line is whether enamel is intact: early mineral loss may be strengthened through remineralization, but physically lost enamel cannot regrow. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Tooth Filling Procedure: Steps, Timing & Aftercare A simple, single-surface filling is commonly estimated at 30–60 minutes; see what numbing feels like, material-specific steps and aftercare warning signs. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Perio Maintenance: What It Is After periodontitis treatment, visits combine ongoing assessment with cleaning above and below the gumline—not simply more frequent routine cleanings. Tooth Decay And Cavities Will a Tooth Infection Go Away on Its Own? No Pain can fade if the pulp dies or an abscess drains, yet the source may remain. Arrange prompt dental care; breathing or swallowing trouble is an emergency. Tooth Decay And Cavities Will a Tooth Abscess Go Away on Its Own? No Pain relief after rupture can be misleading; a draining abscess still needs prompt dental care, while breathing trouble requires emergency care. Daily Oral Hygiene Waxed vs Unwaxed Floss: Fit, Glide, and Grip Neither coating is a universal winner. Check whether it enters, moves without force, wraps around both teeth, and lasts through the routine. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization How to Prevent a Root Canal: Key Steps Use fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily, reduce repeated sugar and starch, protect against injury, and get decay or cracks treated early. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Will a High Filling Fix Itself? Usually, No Temporary sensitivity may settle, but a tooth that contacts first is unlikely to self-correct; after numbness wears off, arrange a bite check. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Early-Stage Tooth Erosion at the Gum Line: Signs Smooth, shiny grooves may reflect erosion, decay, recession or abrasion; intact weakened surfaces may strengthen, but lost structure cannot regrow. Dental Treatment Recovery How Long After Getting a Filling Can You Eat? Wait until normal sensation returns, then check the material: composite is light-cured, while amalgam may need about 24 hours without hard chewing. Daily Oral Hygiene Why Floss Smells and When to See a Dentist Retained food, plaque and bacteria are common causes; persistence, one-gap recurrence, or gum or tooth symptoms make an examination more appropriate. Children Teething And Dental Development Why Gum Grows Over a Back Tooth: Causes It may be a flap over a partly erupted wisdom tooth, swelling, irritation or infection; location and symptoms help narrow the cause. Daily Oral Hygiene Are You Supposed to Brush Your Gums? Yes—Gently Angle a soft brush about 45° toward the gumline, use light pressure and controlled movements, and avoid forceful scrubbing or trying to cause bleeding. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Can You Die From Gum Disease? Usually Not In ordinary circumstances it is not fatal, but untreated periodontitis can permanently damage supporting bone, causing loose teeth and tooth loss. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Cracked Molar, No Pain: What to Do Without swelling, persistent bleeding, major breakage or chewing difficulty, it generally needs timely dental assessment—not automatic emergency care. Tooth Decay And Cavities How Long Can a Toothache Last? When to Get Care Minor gum irritation may improve in one or two days; pain from cavities or infection can fluctuate or continue until the cause is treated. Timing by Type For a general routine, use it at another time of day. If everything must happen in one session, rinse before brushing unless the label says otherwise. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Stage 2 Periodontal Disease Has Two Meanings A maximum probing depth of 5 mm is one feature compatible with formal Stage II, but it is not sufficient on its own. The label also has an informal use. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel What Does Sudden Tooth Sensitivity to Cold Mean? A root canal is only one possible response, considered when examination and testing show significant pulp involvement. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Tooth Sensitive to Hot but Not Cold: Possible Causes That pattern alone cannot distinguish exposed dentin from decay, a crack, restoration trouble or pulp inflammation. Recurring pain in one tooth needs an appointment. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Do Gums Heal? The Condition Decides Gums can look calmer without a receded gumline moving upward. Healing may mean reduced inflammation, wound closure or disease control rather than regrowth. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Gum Pocket Depth: A Number, but Not a Diagnosis 1-3 mm is generally reassuring, 4 mm needs context, and deeper readings deserve closer professional interpretation because no single number tells the whole story. Dental Treatment Recovery How Long Root Canal Pain Lasts by Type and Trend Mild pressure or biting sensitivity can sometimes extend into the second week, provided the sensation is steadily fading. Fillings Crowns And Restorations How Long a Composite Filling Lasts: Size, Bite and Care Five to ten years is a reasonable planning range, but a filling's present condition is more important than its position within that range. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Dentin Hypersensitivity Self-Care: What Is Safe to Try? Mild, brief, trigger-based sensitivity may justify desensitizing fluoride toothpaste, gentle soft-bristled cleaning and less acid or whitening exposure. Teeth Whitening And Cosmetic Dentistry Do Whitening Strips Damage Teeth? Overuse Raises Risk Lasting damage is unlikely on healthy teeth with exact label use, but zero risk isn't proven. Severe, localized or worsening pain warrants an exam. Children Teething And Dental Development Milk Rot Teeth: Early Mineral Loss vs a Cavity With professional guidance, some non-cavitated areas may be arrested or remineralized using fluoride, improved brushing and reduced prolonged sugar exposure. Daily Oral Hygiene Floss Twice a Day? Only With a Clear Purpose For most people, once daily is the baseline. Gently clean a space when food gets trapped, but have repeated trapping assessed instead of simply flossing more. Dental Treatment Recovery What Bad Breath After Tooth Extraction Means for Healing A stronger odor is more concerning when pain intensifies, swelling increases, or a foul taste, fever, pus or discharge develops during recovery. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Eating After a Root Canal Without a Crown Has Limits Normal sensation, not a fixed number of hours, is the trigger to eat. Then choose low-chew foods and keep pressure off the tooth until final restoration. Fillings Crowns And Restorations You Can Get a Needed Filling While Pregnant A stable, nonurgent cavity may be scheduled in the second trimester. Worsening pain, swelling or suspected infection calls for prompt assessment in any trimester. Tooth Decay And Cavities Minor Cavities: Care Changes When Enamel Breaks Size, color and pain do not establish the stage. Intact enamel may remineralize, while a formed hole is lost structure that home care cannot replace. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Ceramic Crowns: Porcelain vs Zirconia by Tooth and Bite Both are ceramics, but construction changes the trade-off: layered zirconia's surface porcelain may chip while the framework remains intact. Daily Oral Hygiene How to Prevent Tartar Build-Up by Removing Plaque How well prevention works can still vary with saliva, tooth position, dental appliances, oral dryness, access and individual buildup patterns. Gum Disease And Gingivitis How to Check for Gingivitis: Signs That Recur Repeated bleeding under gentle pressure, particularly with puffiness or an altered appearance, is a clearer signal that the gums may be inflamed. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Is Periodontal Disease Reversible? Stage Decides Gingivitis can reverse while attachment and bone remain intact. In periodontitis, less bleeding can mean treatment is working even though bone loss remains. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care A Loose Permanent Tooth Calls for 1 of 3 Responses Mild, gradual looseness with no severe symptoms or recent trauma may allow the earliest dental appointment instead of same-day emergency care. Tooth Decay And Cavities Can Molar Tooth Decay Heal? Treatment Changes by Stage Early mineral loss in intact enamel may remineralize; once a hole forms, missing structure cannot return. Pain or color cannot reliably distinguish the two. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care What Receding Gums Look Like: 3 Visual Clues to Check A longer-looking tooth is most informative when it represents a new change and appears with a shifted gum edge or newly exposed root. Dental Checkups And Professional Cleaning Dental Prophylaxis Is a Preventive Cleaning A routine prophy may take roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Unlike a deep cleaning, it does not treat established periodontitis. Daily Oral Hygiene How to Clean Plaque Off Teeth and Know When to Stop If the material remains fixed, rough, or crust-like after normal cleaning, it may be tartar and should be assessed professionally. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Non-Surgical Gum Disease Treatment: Options and Limits Scaling and root planing should not be expected to predictably regenerate substantial gum tissue or supporting bone that has already been lost. Dental Treatment Recovery 7 Things a White or Yellowish Film Over a Socket Can Be It may appear around days 2-3 and remain through the first week or longer. Improving pain and swelling are more informative than color alone. Fillings Crowns And Restorations 5 Grinded Teeth Repair Options and How Dentists Choose Wear depth and location, exposed dentin, cracks, remaining sound structure and the forces a repair must bear shape the choice. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Gum Recession Has Causes Beyond Gum Disease Recession can be a sign of periodontal disease, but it can also develop from mechanical trauma, thin gum tissue, tooth position, injury, or tobacco use. Dental Treatment Recovery How Long Numbing Lasts After a Filling by Injection Type Dental-provider pages describe four or five hours as plausible, particularly after a lower-jaw nerve block or when the lip, cheek, or tongue remains affected. Children Teething And Dental Development Impacted Canine, but Surgery Isn't Automatic Options range from surveillance to exposure with traction or extraction. Anatomy, existing damage and the likelihood of safe movement shape the choice. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization Eating After Fluoride Treatment: Wait Times by Type Reported waits are about 30 minutes for rinse and 30-60 minutes for gel or foam, with separate guidance for varnish. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Hypoplastic Enamel Forms Early, but Effects Vary A small, stable defect without decay or symptoms may be monitored. Vulnerable structure may need sealants, fillings or coverage. Enamel cannot regrow. Tooth Decay And Cavities Cavities Aren't Always the Cause of Bad Breath Cleaning and hydration may reduce surface contributors but cannot repair tooth damage. Treating decay may improve breath only if that tooth contributed. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Tooth Condition, Not Pain, Decides If You Need a Filling An intact early lesion may suit preventive care and monitoring. Cavitated, progressing, structurally damaged or deeper decay commonly calls for restoration. Cavity Signs And Appearance White Spots on Teeth: What They Mean and What to Do They may mean active mineral loss to control, a structural defect to protect or only an appearance concern to monitor. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Lost a Filling? Act Promptly, but Know When It's Urgent Call a dentist, rinse gently and avoid chewing on that tooth. Persistent pain, swelling, fever or a visible fracture warrant urgent assessment. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Why Your Gums Bleed When You Floss: 4 Patterns Inflammation and technique injury can overlap: inflamed tissue is easier to injure, and a forceful slip can make an irritated site bleed more. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Composite or Amalgam Choice Varies by Size and Decay Risk Amalgam may retain an advantage in some large multisurface back-tooth fillings, high-caries-risk cases, or sites where moisture makes bonding difficult. Fillings Crowns And Restorations What to Do If Your Crown Broke Off at the Gum Line Save detached pieces, avoid chewing or DIY fixes, and call a dentist promptly. The failure may involve the cement, cap, core, post, tooth or root. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Silver Fillings vs White Fillings: What Suits the Tooth Composite needs reliable moisture control; amalgam can suit some heavily loaded cavities. An intact silver filling should not be removed solely to prevent disease. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Stage 3 Gum Disease Can Mean Different Things A 7 mm pocket warrants a full periodontal evaluation rather than an automatic stage label based on that measurement alone. Gum Disease And Gingivitis What Counts as an Early Sign of Gum Disease? Recurring bleeding together with swelling, tenderness, or a change from your normal gum appearance deserves attention even when there is no pain. Daily Oral Hygiene How to Clean Dental Retainers by Type and Material Use compatible mild soap and a soft brush unless the retainer manufacturer or treating provider specifically approves a toothpaste for your appliance. Children Teething And Dental Development Dental Space Maintainers Require Individual Assessment Wear can range from several months to a few years. The missing tooth, remaining space and permanent tooth's development shape need and removal. Cavity Signs And Appearance The Start of a Cavity: What It Can Look Like Early decay often causes no pain, and cavities can develop between teeth or in other locations that are difficult to inspect. Dental Treatment Recovery Brushing After Tooth Extraction Varies by Area Some providers permit gentle same-day brushing of teeth well away from the extraction, while others advise no brushing for the first 24 hours. Dental Treatment Recovery Salt Water Rinsing After Tooth Extraction Depends on Timing After about 24 hours, rinse gently only if permitted and active bleeding has stopped. One accidental early rinse does not prove dry socket will develop. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Sensitive Tooth After a Filling: Monitor or Call a Dentist? A changed bite, no meaningful improvement, symptoms still significant at roughly two to four weeks, or pain that worsens or disrupts eating deserve dental review. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Swollen Gums: Causes by Location and Pattern Little or no pain may accompany gingivitis, medication-related enlargement, periodontal disease and even some abscesses. Dental Checkups And Professional Cleaning Wait Times for Eating After Teeth Cleaning by Treatment No wait is usually needed after an uncomplicated routine cleaning if you feel comfortable. Follow fluoride instructions, and do not chew while numb. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Gingivitis Isn't Directly Contagious Saliva can transfer oral bacteria, but exposure does not mean gum inflammation will develop. No established contagious period determines when kissing is safe. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Periodontitis Reversibility Depends on What Was Lost Care can control active disease, but lost attachment or bone generally remains. Some bone may regrow in selected defects with grafting or guided tissue regeneration. Cavity Signs And Appearance What a Cavity Looks Like by Stage and Location Some decay is pale and subtle, some dark and obvious, and some cannot be seen at home at all, so a normal mirror check cannot rule it out. Tooth Decay And Cavities Black Tooth Decay: When It Can Be Reversed If mineral loss has occurred but the tooth surface remains intact, fluoride and control of contributing factors may help arrest or partly reverse it. Gum Disease And Gingivitis How Long Gingivitis Takes to Heal and What Delays It Commercial sources commonly estimate about two weeks when gingivitis is caught promptly, plaque and tartar are addressed, and daily cleaning continues. Cavity Signs And Appearance How to Check for a Cavity and When an Exam Is Needed When clinically appropriate, dental X-rays can reveal some cavities between teeth that are not visible directly or detectable with the tongue. Tooth Decay And Cavities 7 Possible Outcomes of an Untreated Cavity A painless cavity is not necessarily shallow or stable, and new pain does not reveal when decay began. Depth affects risks and treatment choices. Tooth Decay And Cavities How Long a Cavity Takes: Risk and Decay Stage Dental-practice sources report a physical cavity may form within a few months under higher-risk conditions, including frequent sugar exposure. Gum Disease And Gingivitis What Is Stage 1 Gum Disease, and Can It Be Reversed? Usually gingivitis, this gum-only inflammation is generally reversible before bone loss, but it cannot be self-diagnosed or treated by brushing harder. Gum Disease And Gingivitis What Gum Disease Looks Like and What a Mirror Misses New puffiness, shine, color change or repeated bleeding can be warning signs. Your baseline matters more than pinkness, but a mirror cannot reveal bone loss. Dental Treatment Recovery Can I Brush My Teeth After a Filling? When to Wait For a routine permanent filling, brushing is generally safe immediately or later that day. Setting time matters more for chewing than for gentle brushing. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel What Tooth Sensitivity to Cold Can Mean and When to Act Cold sensitivity alone does not mean you need a root canal. Root canal therapy is reserved for cases where an exam shows the pulp is affected. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization How Do Teeth Demineralize and Remineralize? An intact white-spot lesion may become harder and inactive while remaining visible, which means successful arrest need not erase the mark. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Is Gingivitis Communicable? Bacteria vs Disease Available evidence gives no sound basis for advising every couple to stop kissing when one partner has inflamed gums. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization Can Cavities Go Away on Their Own? A Hole Draws the Line A white or chalky spot can occur with early mineral loss, but its appearance cannot establish the cause or confirm that the enamel is still intact. Children Teething And Dental Development 5 Stages of Teething: Age Ranges and Teeth The familiar model hides two key details: upper and lower eruption windows differ, and lateral incisors do not appear in the sequence at all. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Sensitive Teeth After Whitening Need a Pattern Check Brief twinges across several teeth that steadily improve are more reassuring. One-tooth, heat-triggered or lingering pain needs prompt assessment. Gum Disease And Gingivitis What Unhealthy Gums Look Like: Signs Beyond Color A new red, pale, white or dark patch is more informative than gum shade alone, especially with swelling, soreness, bleeding, recession or altered texture. Fillings Crowns And Restorations Why Does My Tooth Filling Hurt After Months? Main Causes Pain that never stopped may stem from filling placement or pulp response. New pain after pain-free months suggests a crack, decay, filling shift or another tooth. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization Are Cavities Reversible? A Hole Is the Dividing Line Early mineral loss may remineralize if enamel is intact, but missing tooth structure cannot regrow. Pain and appearance cannot reliably show which applies. Tooth Decay And Cavities Sugar Can Cause Cavities Indirectly Plaque bacteria turn sugar into acids that remove enamel minerals. Reducing free sugar lowers, rather than eliminates, the risk of decay. Children Teething And Dental Development Some People Never Develop Wisdom Teeth: How to Know A dental X-ray can help distinguish a third molar that never formed from one that is unerupted, partially erupted or impacted. Cavity Signs And Appearance What Are the First Signs of a Cavity or Tooth Decay? Early mineral loss can be invisible. The earliest visible change may be a chalky white area. Stains and sensitivity cannot confirm decay at home. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Pimple on Gums: Infection and Look-Alike Causes Do not pop or puncture it. Seek emergency care for breathing or swallowing difficulty, substantial facial or neck swelling, or restricted mouth opening. Children Teething And Dental Development Space Maintainer: What It Does and Who Needs One It preserves room. A narrowed gap may need active space regaining. A child may wear one for several months to a few years, based on dental development. Tooth Decay And Cavities The Stages of Cavities Reflect Decay Depth A five-stage model runs from mineral loss to abscess, but stage counts vary. Only intact early mineral loss may reverse. A formed hole will not regrow. Cavity Signs And Appearance Stain vs Cavity: 4 Clues Beyond Tooth Color Brown or black marks may represent external pigment, tartar, a stained groove, an old restoration, a crack or decay. Only a dental exam can determine the cause. Tooth Decay And Cavities Average Cavities: Count by Age Band No official count isolates age 30. The closest figure is a mean DMFT of 6.4 for ages 20-34: decayed, missing or filled permanent teeth. Cavity Signs And Appearance What Black Lines on Molars Mean and When to Act A line that is new, enlarging, widening, pitted, sensitive or painful is a reason to ask a dental practice about a sooner appointment. Cavity Signs And Appearance Black Spot on a Tooth Can Be Decay, but Color Isn't Proof Some dark lesions are arrested decay that a dentist may monitor rather than drill. A new, persistent or changing mark still warrants an examination. Gum Disease And Gingivitis A Bump on Your Gums Can Range From Minor to Urgent It can drain, shrink and become less painful without proving that the underlying source of the problem has resolved. Teeth Whitening And Cosmetic Dentistry Composite Bonding: How It Works and When It Falls Short Adding resin may make a mildly irregular tooth look straighter from the front, but it cannot move it, create room in a crowded arch or change how teeth meet. Daily Oral Hygiene Dental Floss vs Floss Picks: Control vs Handling Floss picks can be a reasonable alternative for people with generally healthy gums and uncomplicated dental needs who struggle to manipulate loose floss. Gum Disease And Gingivitis What Is the Earliest Stage of Periodontal Disease? Gingivitis is the earliest form, not "stage 1 periodontitis." Inflammation remains limited to the gums, without periodontitis-related bone loss. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Gingivitis vs Periodontitis: Whether Tooth Support Is Lost A 4 mm pocket may prompt closer periodontal assessment, but a measurement at that depth does not independently prove periodontitis. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Healthy vs Unhealthy Gums: Signs Beyond Color Color alone is not the test. Compare firm fit, comfort and routine bleeding with your personal baseline, then check which changes need dental care. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Periodontal Disease Isn't Contagious Like a Cold Saliva can transfer oral bacteria, but kissing is not proven to cause periodontitis, and no reliable risk estimate exists for one kiss or repeated kissing. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel What to Do About Tooth Sensitivity After a Filling If the tooth is not improving, interferes with eating, wakes you, or feels too tall when you close your teeth, contact the treating dentist. Teeth Whitening And Cosmetic Dentistry Oil Pulling Does Not Reliably Whiten Teeth Studies have generally measured salivary bacteria, plaque scores, gingival scores, bleeding, or related oral-hygiene outcomes instead of objective tooth color. Cavity Signs And Appearance Front Tooth Cavity Treatment Changes With Its Stage Once a hole has formed, missing tooth structure cannot regrow, so professional restoration is generally needed instead. Cavity Signs And Appearance Gum Line Cavity Can Involve Enamel or an Exposed Root An area that is only beginning to lose minerals may sometimes be managed without a filling, while a permanent hole generally requires dental repair. Tooth Decay And Cavities How Long Does a Cavity Take to Form? What Affects It Acid attacks can begin quickly, but a physical cavity develops through a variable process that cannot be dated from color, sensation, or appearance. Tooth Decay And Cavities How Long a Cavity Takes to Form and What Affects It Permanent damage may emerge over months, while many cavities take years. Early mineral loss may still be repairable. A suspected hole needs assessment. Gum Recession And Periodontal Care Receding Gums Stages and the Limits of Labels Early, moderate and advanced can help describe what you notice, but they cannot reveal the cause, amount of tooth support or whether the area is changing. Tooth Decay And Cavities Four vs. Five Stages of Tooth Decay: What Changes A four-stage guide groups abscesses under advanced pulp infection. You cannot diagnose a stage from a photo, spot color or symptom checklist. Tooth Decay And Cavities Tooth Decay Stages: Four-Stage vs. Five-Stage Intact early mineral loss may sometimes be remineralized; permanent structural breakdown cannot be repaired through home care alone. Cavity Signs And Appearance What a Dental Cavity Looks Like at Each Stage Early decay may be a chalky white patch before any hole forms; developing damage may look rough or pitted, and decay between teeth may be invisible in a mirror. Cavity Signs And Appearance What a Cavity Looks Like and When It's Invisible Possible decay may appear as a subtle white enamel change, a rough, discolored pit or a visible hole, but stay hidden between teeth or under dental work. Cavity Prevention And Remineralization How Can You Prevent Cavities in Children? White or chalky spots may respond to better plaque removal, fluoride exposure and fewer daily sugar attacks. Brushing starts with the first tooth. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Acidic Drinks Erode Enamel With Repeated Exposure Each sip can restart the acidic challenge before saliva buffers the last. Shorten drinking windows, rinse with water and avoid brushing immediately afterward. Tooth Decay And Cavities The Five-Stage Decay Model Maps How Cavities Form A true hole will not rebuild on its own. Before one forms, fluoride and less frequent sugar exposure may help early damage stall or partly repair. Tooth Decay And Cavities Trace How Sugar Causes Tooth Decay Frequent snacks, slowly sipped sweet drinks, and back-to-back carbs let plaque bacteria make acid again before the mouth returns to neutral. Daily Oral Hygiene Proper Toothbrushing Needs 3 Core Skills Most brushing problems come down to three things: the angle is off, the pressure is too high, or the coverage is incomplete. Gum Disease And Gingivitis Gingivitis vs Periodontitis: Stages of Gum Disease Pocket depth, bleeding, tooth mobility and imaging are more informative together than any single sign when assessing how far it has progressed. Teeth Whitening And Cosmetic Dentistry Teeth Whitening Options Work Differently by Stain In-office treatment is usually fastest, but crowns, veneers and fillings generally stay the same shade. One dark tooth may need diagnosis first. Teeth Whitening And Cosmetic Dentistry Veneers vs Composite Bonding: Scope and Commitment Bonding suits small, isolated changes, while veneers suit broader, multi-tooth redesigns. Conventional veneer prep commonly removes about 0.5 mm of enamel. Dental Checkups And Professional Cleaning What Can't Daily Brushing Fix, and When Does It Backfire? Roughly a third of each tooth's surface lies between teeth, beyond bristles. See why tartar, bone loss and acid erosion need different responses. Dental Checkups And Professional Cleaning A Dental Checkup Follows 6 Main Steps The familiar sequence runs from check-in and a history review through cleaning, imaging if needed, a dentist exam and a discussion of the findings. Tooth Decay And Cavities The Cost of Waiting on Dental Work as Options Close Once decay reaches the pulp, a filling is no longer an option; the choice becomes root canal or extraction instead. Dental Checkups And Professional Cleaning When Dental Advice Contradicts Itself: Risk and Evidence "Weak" flossing evidence came from small, short, poorly controlled trials, not trials showing it failed. Brushing advice splits by the dominant risk. Tooth Sensitivity And Enamel Why Are My Teeth Sensitive? Causes and When to Get Help Sensitivity that persists, becomes more intense or stays concentrated in one spot calls for a dental exam rather than another round of home guesswork.

How this site is written

Decay Guide is written by a health writer, not by a dentist, and no article here has been reviewed by a clinician. We work from public patient-education sources — the NHS, the CDC, the American Dental Association and hospital patient guides — and link to them so you can check what we say. Figures such as pocket depths are quoted as the educational benchmarks those sources use, not as thresholds you can apply to yourself. Nothing here replaces an examination.
